Are Gaming Laptops Good for Photo Editing?

The Hardware configuration in gaming laptops is always incredible. They come with dedicated GPUs and plenty of memory or storage so you can store all your projects without worrying about running out of space quickly as I do on my personal computer sometimes because it doesn’t have enough room (even though we’re talking small 512GB SSD). The displays also get an excellent score from me: sharp colors really make detail pop while not being too bright, which helps eyes stay comfortable during long hours spent working away at visuals. On the other hand, a few things about Gaming Laptops might make them less ideal for photo editors.

What is the difference between gaming laptop and editing laptop?

The main difference between a gaming laptop and an editing laptop is that gaming laptops are usually very heavy, have lots of I/O ports, good display quality for visuals but lack customisation options. Editing laptops are very limited in their display quality, so you will not be able to work on large visuals or play games because all your hardware is dedicated to photo editing. Editing laptops, on the other hand, are lighter, come with less I/O ports but have decent specs, which allow you to customise them easily to upgrade parts as they start to fail.

Things to Consider When Shopping For a Gaming Laptop for Photo Editing

Let’s get to what you’re really here for, shall we? Below are the top three reasons why gaming laptops might not be ideal for photo editing and some tips on what to look for when buying one that will solve these problems.

Screen and Display Quality:

Gaming laptops offer excellent colour and detail. However, if you’re looking for a monitor with accurate colour reproduction- an IPS panel is the way to go over TN. Secondly, the resolution on gaming laptops is usually Full HD or even 4K, which can be hard on your eyes after hours of working away at photos, so I would suggest looking for one with a lower resolution.

CPU & GPU Processing Power:

In order to handle those graphics-intense games you play on your laptop, they need extremely powerful processors and GPUs. When it comes time to edit photos that don’t require as much processing as playing a game, the speed of your processor and GPU will affect how quickly you can edit your photos. I would suggest looking for a laptop with at least an i5 processor and if you can afford it, go for an i7 or above, depending on the size of your budget.

Laptop Size:

Gaming laptops are usually much thicker and heavier than other computers due to all the extra hardware inside them, making them less ideal for lugging around town or carrying with you on travels. If you’re a photographer that likes to shoot landscapes and nature, the extra weight makes it a lot more challenging to hold up your laptop and keep it steady, so I would suggest going for something lighter.

Price:

If you’re like me- someone who is always taking photos, you will realize quickly that the better your laptop is for photo editing, the more expensive it will be. This means that if you’re looking to buy a good laptop for less than $1500, don’t expect it to have all the bells and whistles (i7 Processor, 16GB of RAM, Fully featured Graphics Card) for photo editing.

Affluent I/O Connectivity Base

If you’re looking at gaming laptops, they usually have more I/O ports than your standard laptop, which is wonderful for photo editing. A lot of them come with a DVD drive, so if you don’t have one on your home computer and need to use one every once in a while, you will be able to easily transfer files back and forth without the use of external hardware.

Are gaming laptops better for Photoshop?

Gaming laptops definitely have their perks when working with graphics and visuals such as Adobe Photoshop. This is because they come with more I/O ports, which makes photo editing much easier. They’re usually very customizable to upgrade parts easily. Lastly, most of them have good display quality for detailed visuals.

As a photographer, I highly suggest investing in a good laptop for photo editing. Although gaming laptops are great for photo editing, you will still have to pay a pretty penny to get the latest and greatest hardware that will work well with Photoshop. So if you’re not a fan of getting a new computer every couple of years, I would suggest going with something lighter, more professional and less expensive.

Conclusion

Yes, gaming laptops are good for photo editing, and in most cases- they’re great! If this is your first time investing in a laptop for photo editing, I would suggest sticking with the more professional brands because it will cost you less money in the long run. However, if you’re not looking to shell out a lot of cash on a new computer every couple of years, then I would look elsewhere.
